Is that a large bundle of firewood on your head?

Flooded rice fields

Going through the picturesque Balinese countryside is a treat for all the senses.

Seeing stunning views of rice fields with a jungle background, listening to the sounds of birds, frogs and crickets, smelling the scent of flowers in the fresh air, touching lush plants and even butterflies if you’re lucky – absorbing the very essence of Bali.

Look, no hands!

Amid all of this natural beauty don’t be surprised if you see local women carrying large bundles of firewood on their head which will doubtless be used for cooking the next batch of rice.  There is no doubt about it, rice cooked over firewood is much tastier than rice cooked on a stove or in a rice making machine – mmmm, getting hungry now!

Yes, yes, I know, this picture doesn’t show firewood.  This particular lady is carrying fodder for the cows and thin twigs that will soon become brooms.
